April 23rd is a symbolic day in world literature. It is the international day of the book. It is the international day of the book because two of the best writers , Shakespeare and Cervantes died on 23rd April 1616. Shakespeare was also born that day. Isn't it a coincidence?
To commemorate this special day, I am going to devote some lines to one of the best books in English literature: Oliver Twist, written by Charles Dickens. Oliver Twist is a great story about an orphan boy who is trapped in the London's criminal world. He faces a lot of problems until he discovers his true identity.
We are reading this book in class and we are going to work with it in depht since this year we celebrate the bicentenary of Charles Dickens (1812-1870). Since we have read only six chapters, I invite my students and whoever is interested in literature to choose two of the following questions and answer them:
1. What do we know about Oliver's mother?
2. Who is the first person who wants to teach a job to Oliver? Which job?
3. Why was Oliver punished for asking for more soup? Does this depict the economic situation in England at that time?
4. What is the meaning of these words: artful- dodger- twist . Is there any symbolism in the characters' names?
5. Tell me something you read about Charles Dickens that you consider interesting.
6. Have you enjoyed the story so far? What is your opinion about it?
Oliver Twist, una de las obras más importantes de la literatura inglesa por todo lo que representa y por el gran autor por quien fue escrita. Con esta entrada invito a mis alumnos que la están leyendo y a cualquier otra persona que esté interesada en el tema a escribir algo sobre la obra o su autor. Celebro así a mi manera el día del libro, un día muy representativo para aquellos que aman leer.
1 - About Oliver's mother know that she was not marriednobody knew where it came from and it was a beautiful woman.
ResponderEliminar2 - If I remember correctly, I think it is Mr. Sowerberry wants to do it, this work is the undertaker.
3 - If he was punished for asking for more soup and that all children in the orphanage were hungry and decided that Oliver was the one who would ask more. The situation in England was in poverty and was based mostly in suburbs.
4 - Artful is "Ingenioso" and Dodger is "evasor" are adjectives which symbolize the child.
Twist is "retorcido, enredado o giro" and may symbolize that Oliver is a boy who is left twist ("enredado").
5 - I only know a book other than Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens, David Copperfield is a very interesting book for what they say, I have not read but want to.
6 - So far the story I liked it, I've got a lot in the skin of the character and I was rather surprised, I hope that in the next chapters surprised me even more

Me ha encantado encontrarme con alguien que admira también a C. Dickens. A mi también me admira y me sigue admirando: fué el escritor con quien me inicién en mis primeras lecturas y de quien guardo un recuerdo imborrable. Le leí de jovencito. El libro era David Coperfiel. Una maravilla. La pena que tengo ahora es no poder haberlo leido en su lengua original. Por eso, al encontrarme quí con alguien que lo lee y lo explica en su lengua, me ha cautivado. Y no sólo eso, sino que he avanzado husmeando en este blog y he descubierto que quien escribe y nos sugiere cosas, nos eseña y nos suscita preguntas es una profesora, que por la foto que se ve en la cabina debe ser muy joven y encima profesora. Pienso que sus alumnos si la buscan y la encuentran aquí deben sentirse orgullosos de tener una profesora que cree en su oficio de enseñar. Pôr otra parte, todo lo que dice es una invitación a la inteligencia para abrir nuevas ventanas para que entren nuevos aires de renovación. Vaya por delante afirmar que dominar idiomas es un lujo, pero ahora más que nunca. Y en este blog se nos invita a "ponernos· en ello. Quizás me anime y me ponga a repasar aquel inglés que aprendimos en el bachillerato hace algunos años del que solo recordamos el "how are you"?. Thank you, very much, y muy poco más. Ojalá se hubiera cruzado en mi vida este modelo de profesora. Seguro que habria obtenido de mi mejor rendimiento por lo que al inglés como lengua y cultura se refiere. Te seguiré leyendo.
ResponderEliminarMe alegro de que Charles Dickens también formara parte de tu vida. Es un escritor maravilloso y sus obras aún lo son más. Es una maravilla poder ver cómo muestra Inglaterra en esos tiempos a través de esos personajes tan cautivadores.
