Why do Spanish students find learning English so difficult?

In Spain, the percentage of students who fail English is always high. They fail English every single year. They don't know how to write, how to talk, how to read a text... they don't know anything or THEY THINK THEY DON'T KNOW... How is this possible if they have studied English since they started primary school? Is it because of teachers, books, methodologies, feelings of anxiety and embarrassment when using the language, lack of motivation? What do you think is/are the main reason/reasons for this failure? What about your experience?

Write a comment expressing your opinion about this topic. Remember, be respectful with others and follow netiquette rules.

*This activity was designed to practise "expressing opinions" with my SMR students this year. They have to write a comment about this topic, express their opinions and be resfecful (NETIQUETTE)

To celebrate this day, I'm going to ask you three questions that I want you to answer:

2. What is your favourite book? Is there any book that has been important in your life?

3. What is the worst book you have ever read?

CONVERSATION EXCHANGE

Yesterday, I organised a private event with Spanish and American students. The aim was to make them practise English and Spanish respectively, meet new people and learn about other cultures. We met at 7:00 p.m in an Irish pub and we stayed there for about two hours. I think my Spanish students really liked the activity since most of them had never met any American speaker before. They had the opportunity to practise what we had learnt in class. I think that for the American students it  was also an opportunity to meet people from Valencia. They talked about their hobbies, interests, studies, jobs, traditions and festivals and many other things that kept them talking in a lively way. I would like to thank my friend Javi for helping me with the organisation of the event , ISA (International Students Abroad) for helping me to find so many American students and all the people who participated.

Hope to see you all soon!

Confusing words

Do you know the difference between these three words?

RECEIPT

RECIPE

PRESCRIPTION

Receipt is what you get when you buy an item (ticket de compra, recibo, factura)

Recipe is the set of instructions that you have to follow to cook something (receta de cocina)

Prescription is what you get when you go to the doctor and he/she prescribes drugs to you (receta médica)

The words may be confusing because in Spanish we use the same word for recipe and prescription.

Receipt                                           Recipe

 Prescription
