Why do Spanish students find learning English so difficult?

In Spain, the percentage of students who fail English is always high. They fail English every single year. They don't know how to write, how to talk, how to read a text... they don't know anything or THEY THINK THEY DON'T KNOW... How is this possible if they have studied English since they started primary school? Is it because of teachers, books, methodologies, feelings of anxiety and embarrassment when using the language, lack of motivation? What do you think is/are the main reason/reasons for this failure? What about your experience?

  2. Hehe, I think the students think that it's very difficult and they're "scared" from the subject. I don't know why they think it...

I think english isn't difficult for me, so I can't say how it feels.

  5. My opinión is: That the spanish student don't know the importan of speaking a secon lenguaje. The spanish students and ofthen their parentes think the English not valid on future. But, when you know the new communications systems and study advanced courses fail i English. I think in Spain, is given more importance to other subjects, not as necessary that the English.

    SPAIN IS DIFFERENT!!!!

  10. My opinion is this:
We learn English at primary school but only vocabulary and we only know say dog, cat and apple.
We learn all the years the same in high school. To be, can, irregular verbs and comparative and no practices the language only learn about it.
And finally I think we must practice in the school and with native people because we can write perfect English but we must know speak too.

    1. Thanks Lucas for your opinion. I agree with the fact that in primary students should study more things and start speaking!
In secondary, we always learn the same although I believe this is changing thanks to some teachers who go beyond grammar.
It would be perfect to have native speakers in class...but I think that's impossible.

In my opinion, the education system is bad. Now, the young children, are learning English since I start school. In my time, didn't.

Well, I think in our country we have never gave English the importance it deserves, but this is changing. We have only to see how it is increasing by instance its presence in "ciclos formativos".
However I think we should spend more time speaking English in class. In fact I think we should give the class entirely in English, although this requires more effort on our part. I also would increase at least to five
    weekly hours this subject.
    That's all.

    I agree with you Belen.
In my opinion , the Education system have a lot of bugs , teachers should teach English pronunciation and vocabulary in Primary and not only basical English like (Dog , cat , do verb , etc)
Spain is doing it wrong , it doesn't happen in others countries like Germain or France. They start learning "hard" english soon.

  16. I think the main reason is that English language and Spanish language are very different, but also, in Spain, traditionally, it hasn't been given to the importance of English language has to have. Now we are realizing how important is English language.

I'm 21 years old and I've never learned phonethics until this year. So yeah, I'm agree with you just because if teachers will teach better since we are young (doing speeches, working in groups and so on) students would improve their knowledge helping in a future to get a job.

  18. Thank you for all your comments, they were very interesting!

From my point of view, Spanish learners find English difficult because...

    1. The educational system does not provide a good system for the teaching of languages. This is the main problem. It is very difficult to teach English with this system

    2. A language should not be studied as a subject. A language is not maths or history. It is a language and a language is learnt not only in a classroom

    3. The teaching of English in primary should be changed

    4. The teaching of English in secondary needs more qualified teachers whose passion is English

    5. There is no motivation on the part of teh students towards the forign language. No interest, no effort, no time devoted to the language..... imply failure.

    Thanks for your opinions!

I think that the educational system compels the student to memorizar grammar and verbs as a theorem. As consequence, the student only learns english for doing the exam, not for using it in his lifetime.
This is the principal reason that is why a lot of people despite five years learning english, they have still speaked a bad english.
The government spends a lot of time with this method, now is the moment to change it.
